Making the switch: Trucking cos. face pros and cons in using natural gas
With the ongoing development of U.S. shale plays, there has been a lot of hype about natural gas.
However, long-haul, heavy-duty trucking companies have had their eyes on natural gas well before oil and gas companies tapped it out of shale plays. In fact, experts at an IHS CERAWeek panel Tuesday explained that the technology to run trucking engines off of natural gas has been available since the 1980s.
So, why are trucking companies suddenly using compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas for fuel? Economics, explained John Wall, vice president and chief technical officer for Indiana-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI), an engine manufacturer.
