Canadian-based fleet puts together the perfect combination

Summary

What does it take to compete in today's business climate? According to Wendell Erb, president of the Erb Group of Companies, "The keys to our success are our tremendously loyal employees, our culture of safety, and our commitment to under-promise and over-deliver for our customers." Couple that with the company's special trailer spec, and it spells success.

"Great Dane Trailers has helped our company achieve its delivery goals over the years," says Erb. "We bought our first Super Seal trailers in 1993 and eight of 10 of are still on the road today. We are primarily in the LTL business and that results in high forklift traffic in trailers. We spec'd the Extreme Heavy Duty Duct floor with advice from our dealer, Glasvan Great Dane Sales in Mississauga, Ontario. back in 1993 as a solution to our ongoing premature failures of floors. In combination with hardwood fillers (now composite) and additional cross members at the rear of the trailer, we no longer have floor failures." Because the floors are now sturdier, they are also heavier, so the fleet specifies lightweight options such as Motor Wheel CentriFuse brake drums and Accuride aluminum disc rims.

natural option for us given the length of service
we expect from our trailers."

Erb & Great Dane developed specific trailer spec
Erb notes that the company is spec'ing its Great Dane trailers to last 12- to 15-plus years. "When ThermoGuard was introduced it was a natural option for us given the length of service we expect from our trailers. Every aspect of the trailer is reviewed for strength, durability and weight. Over the years we have fine-tuned the spec with options such as, CorroGuard, Transtex skirts, Hendrickson VANTRAAX HKANT 46K air suspension, and HXL7 wheel ends. We also have recently added hot dipped galvanized crossmembers as a standard spec moving forward. Our lighting package is Grote LED long life light system. Our goal is to balance longevity and light-weight technology and we feel we have achieved the correct balance with our Great Dane Everest SS trailers today."

Great Dane dealer, Glasvan Trailers Inc., also helps Erb manage a variety of pre-delivery details. "We have reefer units installed at the factory in Wayne NE, as well as the decal package, chutes and dividing panels (if equipped), Erb says. "The dealer also manages the inbound trailers, but occasionally we will pick up new trailers which are ready to go to work from the factory. However, we still deliver them to the dealer for a thorough pre-delivery inspection before putting them into service. Glasvan has always been very responsive to our needs. When we have a complicated spec trailer we turn to Glasvan because we know it will be done right."

The trailers and the spec's seem to be just the right combination since more than 87% of The Erb Group companies' 1,200 trailers are Great Danes.

Hauling Elephants?

Okay, maybe not elephants, but cargo that needs a floor that handles heavy loads Did you know that Great Dane's floor system on the Everest reefer series combines a high floor rating with the strongest support features?

Here's why it's an exceptional system:

1. Continuous composite floor sills are located over each crossmember for support.

2. Corrosion protection is enhanced with special organic-coated fasteners connecting the floor and composite floor sills.

3. The floor's insulation is protected from external moisture by a one-piece thermoplastic sub pan.

4. The aluminum duct floor is automatically welded full length to seal out all moisture.

5. Air and electrical lines are routed above the cross members in PVC helping to protect lines against road debris and making repair access easy.
