A relationship between Great Dane and Sapa Extrusions North America is bringing engineering, product design, production and delivery advantages to customers. Two and a half years ago, Great Dane approached Sapa for an innovative solution for manufacturing the large extrusions used on its High Base Rail (HBR) trailer model.
The answer was found in Sapa's new 6,000-ton UBE press that had recently been installed in the company's Connersville, Indiana plant, the only extrusion plant in North America fully dedicated to the trailer market.
With the help of its global network, Sapa Extrusions North America was able to tap into the resources of its European counterpart, which supported the initial die design and engineering analysis for the HBR trailer extrusion that Great Dane required. Sapa North America then embarked on the development of engineering and tooling initiatives needed to construct a die for the HBR extrusion to ensure maximum performance and reliability for Great Dane customers.
At over 20 inches wide, the HBR trailer extrusion for Great Dane is among the largest extruded shapes produced by Sapa Extrusions North America. The press at Sapa's Connersville plant was the first in North America to produce an extrusion this size with the required finish and tolerances.
Today, Great Dane trailers using HBR extrusions from Sapa offer customers the benefits of lower costs and improved aesthetics, adding to the already inherent high quality fit and finish of Great Dane HBR models.
